Established in 1994, NFTE DC Region has been able to reach over 25,000 students since its founding, including 1,100 during the past school year. As the 2013-2014 school year gets underway, thanks to the generosity of donors like you on Microsoft’s Give For Youth platform, NFTE DC Region has funded nine new classrooms in seven new schools around the nation’s capital. Thanks to the incredible donations we received through Give For Youth, we were able to provide the NFTE program to Drew Freeman Middle School, Options Public Charter School, Sousa Middle School, Friendship Tech Prep Academy, Coolidge High School, Dubnar High School, and Washington Metropolitan High School. These classrooms represent almost 400 students who will now have access to entrepreneurial education, and the ability to choose their own pathway to success through NFTE.
Students use the NFTE curriculum to learn about return on investment, opportunity recognition, personal finance, sales and marketing, business ethics, and more. The funds from this project were used to train nine new NFTE certified teachers, provide materials for each classroom, and for key learning opportunities like field trips. The materials range from experiential team-building exercises to the award-winning curriculum, Entrepreneurship: Owning Your Future. Each of the nine new classrooms will also, at the end of school year, hold a classroom business plan competition. As part of the NFTE curriculum each student must, using the lessons learned throughout the course, formulate a business plan for a product or service they are passionate about. They then pitch their plan to a panel of judges in a classroom competition, with the winners advancing to face each other in the Regional Competition. With 400 new students in the mix this year, the NFTE DC Region will no doubt feature some great new youth businesses. Thanks again for your support through the Give For Youth platform.
