Climbing the Matterhorn to help open a new Haven

A microproject by The Haven
Climbing the Matterhorn to help open a new Haven

Summary

A group of men (Andrew Bentley, Kevin Bespolka, Will Hellier, Malcolm Le May, Tim Wheeler and John Woodman) with a combined age of 300 from London's finance sector, with no previous mountaineering experience, will climb the Matterhorn, Swiss Alps, in August 2013. By taking on this incredible challenge they hope to help raise $200,000 to open a new Haven centre in Hampshire. This area of England has one of the highest rates of breast cancer incidence in the country.

Challenge

Hampshire in the UK is an area that has one of the highest breast cancer incidences in the country. There is currently very little support and help available for people affected by the disease. The Haven intends to open a new centre in Hampshire where people can access its unique programme of emotional and physical support to help them through the darkest time of their lives.

Solution

The Haven has mounted a capital fundraising campaign to raise enough funds to purchase a building and secure two year's running costs. To contribute towards the fundraising for this project a team of men have set themselves an immense challenge by training to climb one of the toughest mountains in the world. Due to the limits set by this micro-project the target limit is $10,000 but the team is aiming to raise a massive $200,000!

Long-Term Impact

We will provide 500 new breast cancer patients a year in Hampshire with the support, information and skills to maximise self-management of their illness, rebuild their well-being, and transform their quality of life. We will also give their families support and advice.
