By Luu Thi Phan | Hai Hoa Music Program Project Leader
Dear Sponsors,
In late July, Rock-Paper-Scissors Children’s Fund board members and volunteers met in Hue, Vietnam for nine days. After several days of meeting with local nonprofits, Hue School of Culture and Arts headmaster, local musicians and authorities and surveying different sites, we decided to launch a music class in a Hai Hoa, a small commune near Hue.
The officials in Hai Hoa were very enthused about our proposal. Although the area had received aid to transform all the delicate straw houses into sturdy concrete ones over the past decades, nonprofit support remains minimal and the living standards of the locals are still very low. In addition, with agriculture as the main occupation and no promising stable source of income, countless parents and the majority of young adult population in Hai Hoa have left the area to find jobs, mainly in factories and construction, in the cities to support their families. The officials were thus very excited about our proposal in creating a musical outlet for kids since the economic strain in the area has ruled out all forms of investment in extracurricular activities.
The Hai Hoa Chairman offered to provide RPS with a classroom in the middle school so that more of your donations will go directly to the students and not for rent. Our next step is to work with the commune officials and teachers to identify 15 students based on their level of interest in music and financial situation. From the officials in Hai Hoa commune and RPS staff, we would like to thank you so much for your support and making this possible.
Thank you,
Luu Thi Phan and the Rock-Paper-Scissors Children’s Fund Team
