Thank you for reaching more Nicaraguan farmers about bio-fortified beans!

Thank you so much for your generous donation in support of Self-Help International's appeal to expand ag training to more Nicaraguan farmers!  A combination of funds raised through this online appeal as well as offline meant that we will be able to purchase a motorcycle this year.

The communities most in need are also the most difficult to reach. Your support means that we'll be able to to expand agricultural extension programs and reach more farmers to provide trainings on improved farming methods. In turn, farmers who implement this training will be able to increase crop yields, and increase household income.

Part of this expansion includes Self-Help Nicaragua's expansion into bio-fortified beans. This is the first new crop introduced by Self-Help in Nicaragua since Self-Help began working in Nicaragua with the planting of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) in 1999.

The new bio-fortified bean seeds that have been distributed by Self-Help will expand the organization’s mission to provide farmers and consumers with an improved diet. Rendidor beans contain 60% more iron (86 parts per million, or ppm) and 50% more zinc (43 ppm) compared to the traditional bean varieties (frijoles criollos) grown in Nicaragua. Learn more about those crops here!

We are truly grateful for your support.  If you'd like to follow along with the progress made in the coming months, we'll post subsequent updates here.
