Summary

This project will employ two part-time interpreters/translators, key roles in all A.Ss.I.S.T. Information & Client Services, providing income stability and protection under Labour Laws, social and health insurance. A.Ss.I.S.T. provides the opportunity to assist others seeking or benefiting from international protection. The two interpreters/translators will assist hundreds of asylum seekers and, as refugees themselves, will begin to build new lives in Greece.

Challenge

The difficulties faced by beneficiaries of international protection in Greece are many: finding accommodation and income support and then to contribute to the host community: a community still recovering from the 2015 economic crisis and where unemployment is the highest in the EU. There is little to no social support available to beneficiaries of international protection in Greece. Many face homelessness or dependence on NGO support services. Their basic rights are not guaranteed.

Solution

This special project will permit the successful candidates to work and to undertake further studies. The most needed languages within our client communities currently are Arabic and Farsi. Both roles will be part time (20 hours per week for six months). These jobs requiring their special language skills without competing with local job seekers. The successful candidates will pass language assessment tests, receive training and assist hundreds of asylum seekers and refugees.

Long-Term Impact

The interpreters/translators employed will begin to build a more stable and safe future for themselves and their families while providing interpreter/translation services to the many applicants and beneficiaries of international protection seeking information and legal aid. There is no fair process unless applicants understand their rights and obligations in their own language. The long-term impact of this understanding and access to legal aid services contributes to fair process.
