Laurita has settled in nicely to her online study routine since she began in May.
She studies from home everyday on a laptop provided to her from EEESMA. Her weekly course material, including assignments, are emailed to a contracted translator who lives in another city. He translates the material from written Spanish to a video in Mexican Sign Language. These weekly videos are then transmitted to Laurita and her teacher and tutor at EEESMA whom she meets at least once each week to receive assistance with her questions and concerns. This is truly a team effort which provides Laurita the best opportunity to receive her course material in her first language, Mexican Sign Language, and for her to get the help and encouragement she needs to succeed.
During August, Laurita was named "Student of the Month" by her university professor; recognizing Laurita's determination, hard work and good grades. Great job Laurita!
The course will run a further 27 months and upon her graduation Laurita will fulfill her dream of becomiing a teacher at EEESMA. This opportunity not only provides Laurita with a higher education, it provides a future fulfilling career for her as a teacher at the school. She will be assured a steady income allowing her to contribute financially to her family which will build her self-esteem in the best possible way. Most significantly she will become a teacher of the deaf while being deaf herself. Laurita is a shining role model to the younger students at school, many who will be inspired to follow in her footsteps.
Thank you to everyone who generously helped make this opportunity for Laurita possible. Your faith in Laurita will live long into the future, for Luarita herself and also for many other students at EEESMA.
