This project will support 10 Junior High School (JHS) girls to continue Senior High School (SHS) for one year. Self-Help International (SHI) provides scholarships to cover school fees, supplies, and transportation so these girls can stay in school and build a better future.
In rural Ghana, many smart and hardworking girls finish junior high school but cannot continue to senior high school because their families cannot afford it. Without help, they may be forced into low-paying jobs or early marriage. Some families can take small loans for school fees, but many cannot. Without financial support, bright students are forced to stop their education. SHI has identified girls who need help, and with your support, we can keep them in school.
SHI will provide scholarships to girls who pass their junior high exams and want to continue their education. Each scholarship will cover admission fees, school supplies, and transportation. Scholars will also get mentorship and life skills training through the Teen Girls Club.
Helping these 10 girls and others stay in school past puberty creates healthier, more financially stable families. Girls who stay in school past 7th grade are less likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth, and more likely to have healthier and better educated children. Plus, every additional year of secondary education she completes will increase her individual earning power by 15 - 25%. The impact of keeping girls in school today will truly transform future generations.
