Summary

Most underprivileged Sri Lankan children from at-risk communities do not have the opportunities or financial means to enjoy the innocent joys of childhood. They never get to play with toys or get presents. Going to carnivals and fun fairs are nothing more than pipe dreams for them. This project will conduct a fun carnival for 100 such children on November 20th, 2018- Universal Children's Day. PEaCE will also use this event to bring joy and spread child abuse awareness amongst the children.

Challenge

PEaCE (Protecting Environment and Children Everywhere) usually conducts an annual event for Children's Day with many at-risk children and child abuse survivors being invited, but it's entirely stage-based. This year, it was noted that a more interactive, fun event would be something that the children would enjoy more. However, such an event would require quite a large amount of funds, which we do not have. This project will raise funds for a carnival especially for 100 at-risk children.

Solution

The project will raise the funds required for the carnival. 100 vulnerable children will receive full free passes to the PEaCE Children's Day Carnival. The Carnival will include at least 5 game stalls, 3 bouncy castles, 5 pinatas with candy, a magician, a merry-go-round, free food and drink, and loot bags with a toy, stationery and candy. To raise awareness regarding child abuse, there will be placards and brochures placed at prominent places with safety messages for the children.

Long-Term Impact

Games and fun remain in the memory of children more than serious speeches and lectures do. By giving them this memorable day, these children would remember PEaCE as an organization of reference during incidents of child abuse and exploitation. They would also be more open to actually read and gain awareness from the brochures given, and pass it on to their peers. The placards placed at key points are targeted to reach the children's subconscious mind, and remind them during times of stress.
