On Lesvos, YSR runs the only public climbing wall for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts on the island. This fundraiser will not only ensure the operation of our new wall, but will give us an opportunity to add two major improvements: 1. One additional wall section, a 5 degree slab wall to train balance, footwork and technique 2. A vertical extension of one wall section with bolts to train for safe outdoor top rope and lead climbing
YSR's move to a new space presented a challenge: the different dimensions meant the old wall simply wouldn't fit as it was. While a lot of effort has gone into adapting and rebuilding, this transition also offers a critical opportunity: to upgrade the structure to be safer, cleaner, and more sustainable for future use. These necessary upgrades and material costs are expensive, which is why we are reaching out to our climbing community for support.
This climbing wall on Lesvos is far more than a recreational facility, it is a free-of-charge hub for community building and integration. The gym is a shared space for people on the move, local Greek citizens, university students, and volunteers. Climbing is one of the sports offered by YSR that connects people beyond language, nationality, or cultural barriers.
By maximizing the potential of this new space, we will be able to repaint the wall, complete essential structural upgrades, and crucially, add a small slab wall and lead climbing section. Climbers from all backgrounds can come and participate together in this open, free climbing space. You are also welcome to come and climb on the wall you helped to build on Lesvos!
