Our unique Cradle to Career Development Model focuses on fighting gender-based violence and social exclusion; two great roadblocks to progress and upward mobility of marginalized South African women and girls--a core group we serve. Over 85% of our 550+ staff members are women, recruited and trained from the communities in which we are based. We need your help to see more numbers like that across industries and sectors in the community.
Women living in the 6 townships where Afrika Tikkun operates, face challenges on a number of different levels. They are single parents: 46-50% of the households we serve monthly are headed by single, unemployed and unskilled mothers, who rely on child support grants for an income. They are less educated and are the first to drop out of school. Additionally, they are victims of high teenage pregnancy and gender based violence with 31% HIV prevalence rate for women between the ages of 15 and 39.
Over 85% of the 550+ staff we employ are women recruited and trained from the communities where we are based in. We support their family and children through nutrition and food security services, family support services, primary health care and education for their children with extra support for families with HIV victims and disabled children. We provide accredited career readiness skills development training, computer literacy classes and entry level work and internship opportunities.
Afrika Tikkun through its unique and holistic cradle to career development model has been working towards addressing the barriers that hinders the progress of South African women. By addressing the stereotypes and eliminating social barriers in the townships, Afrika Tikkun empowers girls to live a brighter future. With your help we will be able to socially and economically empower the women in townships to live a sustainable life.
