Unfortunately, our microproject to raise seed capital for our NFTE DC Regional Competition winners did not receive any funding. However, the students who advanced from the DC Regional Competition to the 2013 National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge still received prize money to expand their businesses. The final competition, in which NFTE DC Region students put their business plans before a panel of judges for further start-up money and the right to advance to New York for the National Competition, was held in May. Even without donations from GlobalGiving, NFTE DC Region still considers providing seed capital and mentoring crucial to the success of our young entrepreneurs. One student, Dagim G., advanced all the way to the finals of the National Challenge, earning him a further $5,000 to go towards his sports blog The Audible, or towards his education. Dagim's success shows the value of students gaining access to start-up funds, so they can see the plans they created grow into an actual business and, through our coaching and mentoring, acquire the first-hand knowledge they will need to succeed in the real world.
