Unfortunately, NFTE Los Angeles’s GlobalGiving project to provide seed capital to the winners of each Classroom Business Plan Competition did not hit our funding goal. Thanks so much to those who did donate, we appreciate all the efforts you have made to bring our students entrepreneurial dreams to life. Even without reaching our goal on GlobalGiving, our classroom competitions wrapped up at the end of the 2014 – 2015 school year. We had some great businesses presented by our young entrepreneurs, as they sought to create and pitch a new venture based on both their life experience and the lessons they had learned in the classroom. The goal of NFTE is to get students thinking in an entrepreneurial mindset, so they will stay engaged in their education and pursue goals that will better prepare them for future success. NFTE’s class, a ‘mini-MBA’, provides them to the tools to do so.
Tech businesses continue to be a theme across the country for NFTE’s young entrepreneurs. Elijah J. of Los Angeles created an app to meet a need that he found in his local community. He kept butting up against the same problem – every time he would go to a park to play basketball, there was never anyone there to play with. Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Elijah developed an app which helps basketball players to find recreation centers and parks near them in order to meet up for games. The app, HoopDreamz, is also a platform which enables it’s users to organize tournaments and discuss tactics/skills important to the sport. This idea of building community through sport is reflected in his partnership with the Boys and Girls club of America: which allows all participants to use his app for free. Elijah has benefitted from his work with the NFTE too, telling us he has new public speaking skills, great connections and a broader view of entrepreneurship. He plans to attend college and major in Business pursing a future career in the corporate world.
Thank you again for your contributions to NFTE through the GlobalGiving platform! Your contributions are helping students like Elijah fully realize the potential of their entrepreneurial mindset.
