Summary

Uganda just concluded a general election in January 2026 which left a trail of conflicts and instability among communities. Conflicts are triggered by campaign violence, ethnic tensions, economic disempowerment and a sense of hopelessness among youth. Instability is triggered by a sense of injustice and signs of electoral malpractice. Independent journalism has a crucial role of raising voices, highlighting issues and uniting communities through publishing stories that address conflicts.

Challenge

Journalists experience numerous challenges of skills gaps, inadequate equipment, lack of facilitation, story sourcing challenges among others yet their role is crucial in publishing stories that change lives by giving a voice to the voiceless. Support and facilitation to gather, process and produce content that unifies a disgruntled community goes a long way in restoring stability. Independent journalism in a post-election period creates an avenue for a more balanced tone of public discourse.

Solution

URN through its network of partners (120 media houses) that include radio stations that use its news for their bulletins plays a unifying role by using conflict sensitive journalism to write and publish stories that address causes of conflict and give voice to mitigation and local solutions.

Long-Term Impact

Reducing ethnic, religious and other factional tensions through genuine knowledge. Building trust and empowering communities to participate in governance. Reduction of corruption and promotion of transparency and accountability. Reducing the impact and prevalence of deliberate misinformation and disinformation. Contributing to a peaceful transition and growth of democratic institutions. Promotion of freedom of speech, freedom of association and media freedom
