Boys pit latrines have reached maximum capacity creating an unhygienic environment in which users are surrounded by human excrement. The staff and students have identified their replacement and improvement as an absolute necessity. However, the school itself lacks the funds to be able to make these significant improvements.
With the current pits reaching maximum capacity, relocation of the boys toilets must occur as the existing site is not fit for purpose. Relocating and rebuilding the toilets requires significant efforts. St. Theresa's cannot currently afford to do this despite persistent criticism from The Kenyan Ministry of Education.
We wish to ensure that the new toilets are of higher quality. This would require more sanitary conditions including lockable doors and a hand washing station, neither of which are currently provided. This demands significant efforts, including digging a new pit and erecting new structures, whilst communicating with contractors, staff and students to ensure suitability.
Erecting these fully functioning structures will mean that male students have improved health conditions at school. This will lead to a reduction in health issues and the corresponding absenteeism that currently occurs as a result of the foul conditions.
