The education of girls is a priority for Jifundishe. For over 10 years, we have been supporting girls in schools all over Tanzania and we want to continue this work in 2023. Our Houston Scholarship Fund has supported over 130 young Tanzanians in educational endeavours and provided them with the tools for a sustainable life. Our goal is $25,000 for this next group of girls. So, if the $10,000 goal has been met, please keep giving!
Girls have always been marginalised in Tanzania when it comes to educational opportunities. The impacts of Covid continue to make that situation much worse by limiting them even more and creating a desperate situation for rural families where brideprice for a young daughter is worth far more than her own education. Girls have no choice when it comes to their futures as they are unable to sustain their own lives and depend on their families, and then, their husbands to provide their basic needs.
Freedom is having a choice. Education frees a girl to make choices for her own future. With an education, and prospects for employment she can choose NOT to marry, not to have sex and possibly get pregnant, and not to settle for a life of poverty. This project will provide the education needed for very poor but capable and motivated girls to pursue a secondary education in an environment that will give them the best chance for success.
The programs and educational material that we provide to the community will lift literacy rates and empower people to change their lives both educationally and economically. As this community begins to climb out of poverty, more children will be able to attend traditional schools, more businesses will thrive and people will be able to take advantage of technological solutions. We currently have hundreds of people in our programs and serve over 200 patrons every day at the library.
