Drinking water is often contaminated in rural areas of Latin American, and many children and families are sick because of it. This project will train volunteers in Honduras to make Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPI's) to help families have clean drinking water. This will be the first program outside of the United States and will help thousands of families throughout Central America. Agua Pura will provide supplies, training and support. The project dates are June 1 through June 15, 2016
Contaminated drinking water is a world wide problem and millions die from water related diseases every year. Children are especially at risk for death from dehydration as a result of diarhea. Communities often lack the resources to provide clean water and so families must find affordable means to protect themselves.
We will provide Pasteurization Indicators (WAPI's) from our new program in Honduras. WAPI's are a simple very low cost devises that shows when water has been heated adequately to kill all pathogens, at pasteurization temperatures rather than need for boiling. Boiling water takes longer, costs more and uses more fuel energy and leaves a "flat" taste, versus pasteurization that is less expensive, and takes less time. Families will have safe drinking water faster and more securely.
Thousands of families in Latin America will be able to receive WAPI's through this program free or at very low cost. The success of this project will allow us to expand our program to other areas of Latin America including Haiti and the Caribbean. Purifying drinking water can potentially save many lives.
