Hands Around the World (HATW) works in partnership with Pamodzi Ndi Ana (PNA) in Zambia. PNA is based in Chipata and is committed to creating better living conditions for children in their communities by providing practical support for their education, health and development.
Deaf children in Zambia face significant challenges, including communication barriers, stigma, discrimination, and negative community attitudes. This project supported students at Magwero School for the Deaf in Chipata, a boarding school supported by PNA. With your support, HATW provided 20 new mattresses with durable, washable covers for the girls’ dormitories, enhancing the wellbeing and comfort of these students and providing them with the dignity they deserve.
The new mattresses will improve the students sleep quality and create a healthier living space for the girls. Improved sleep will support the students learning, enabling them to stay engaged in class, participate more fully in lessons, enhancing their academic skills and achievements.
The project has also helped foster a greater sense of dignity and care. Having a clean, comfortable place to sleep helps the girls feel safe, valued, respected and supported, encouraging regular attendance and full participation in school life, helping them stay in school and continue their education.
When the mattresses were delivered, the school held a ceremony. Simonetta, PNA’s Disability Coordinator in Zambia said, “It was a wonderful celebration! We held a ceremony in a classroom filled with all the children and teachers. They gave several speeches to express their gratitude to both Pamodzi Ndi Ana and Hands Around the World. The children even read a poem written especially to thank us. They were incredibly happy and grateful, repeatedly emphasising just how important everyone's support is for their future.”
Thank you for supporting this project that is positively impacting the health, wellbeing, education and dignity of these students. Your support has made a huge difference to the lives of these children.
