Summary

This project will teach selected displaced women and girls in Northern Nigeria how to swim, stay afloat, cross water safely, and respond during water emergencies. These skills will help reduce drowning deaths when families fleeing attacks or other crises are forced to cross rivers. Participants will also learn basic water rescue and survival skills that may help them save themselves and others.

Challenge

Many women and girls displaced by armed attacks in Northern Nigeria are forced to cross rivers while fleeing for safety. Those who cannot swim face a high risk of drowning, injury, or death. Limited access to swimming lessons and water survival training leaves them unprepared when they encounter rivers or other water hazards during emergencies.

Solution

This microproject will provide practical swimming and water survival training to selected displaced women and girls in Northern Nigeria. Trained instructors will teach them how to swim, float, breathe properly, cross rivers safely, respond to strong currents, and act during water emergencies. Participants will also learn basic rescue skills and ways to avoid drowning.

Long-Term Impact

Women and girls who complete the training will have lifelong swimming and water survival skills that can reduce drowning deaths during displacement and other emergencies. Some participants may share what they learn with their families and communities, helping more people understand water safety, respond to danger, and cross rivers more safely.
