"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Mahatma Gandhi Across the world animals suffer unimaginable abuse and neglect. In our area, we work with an incredible group of women, who are called 'The Horsey Chicks' who rescue and rehabilitate abused and neglected horses. They are hosting one of our ex-learners, teaching her how to love and care for horses, so she will be able to train others, and help more horses in the future.
The abuse of horses is often due to a lack of education about what a horse needs, and feels, and in South Africa, often due to a lack of money to provide food. "Girlie" came to The Horsey Chicks so weak and underfed she had to be rolled onto planks and onto her feet so she could graze. Every day she would be gently encouraged to stand coaxed by the words 'come on girlie'. Her name stuck and 17 years later Girlie is a happy, healthy, well fed and loved horse.
Supporting the Horsey Chicks means they can continue to educate more girls like Likhona, who come from a background of poverty, and a lack of understanding how to properly look after horses. There no other women from African backgrounds in our area that work with horses - Likhona will be the first, developing a deep love for horses, and an understanding how to care for them. Supporting this project means the Horsey Chicks (with Likhona) can continue to rescue horses in need.
More girls like Likhona will be taught how to care for and appreciate horses, and result in less neglect and abuse of horses, and in fact, all animals.
