We are thrilled to send you this update on the progress of our music program here at The Mariposa Center for Girls.
With the help of your donations, some volunteers and a big discount, we were able to purchase a few guitars and make drums and other percussion instruments out of recycled materials. We started our music program in October 2013 with 20 girls and a part-time music teacher. Just a few months later, we have some pretty accomplished percussionists, guitarists and singers! In February, at The Mariposa Center for Girls inaugural gala, the girls played two numbers for a packed house. They got a standing ovation! Liuh-Wen Ting of Ensemble MeMe also performed on stage at the gala and furthermore, donated a full size keyboard to the center for piano lessons!
Following their spectacular performance at the inaguration gala, the Mariposa girls were invited to play at two additional events in Puerto Plata this May! The Mariposa girls were invited by Dona Lilian Russo de Cueto, President of the Sociedad Cultural Renovacion - Bibliotecta Publica as the opening act for the annual literary competition and at a mother's day celebration hosted by Dona Eridania Llibre, the governor of Puerto Plata herself! The mother's day event honored more than 250 mothers living in extreme poverty. The girls were so honored to have performed as part of the entertainment for this special day.
In the coming months we will continue to work hard to grow our wildly successful music program and procure even more instruments for the girls to learn to play. Amazing things are happening because of generous people like you and we thank you for your support!
