South Andros Clinic, March 1-5th 2023
We’re happy to report that 88 dog and cats were spayed and neutered over the weekend at this South Andros clinic in March.
Rose Windsor, an Andros resident who helped organize the clinic, shares her first-hand experience:
“I have noticed the many street dogs the island, often known as ‘Potcakes’. There is no vet on the island, meaning many dogs and cats live without any medical care. I helped organize a spay and neuter clinic in conjunction with Baark! in order to help control the overpopulation and reduce the suffering of animals of South Andros.
The clinic was held in a donated space perfect for Baark! to carry out spay and neuter surgeries. The Baark! team worked selflessly and endless hours, spay, neutering, cleaning dog and cats ears, administering flea and tick medication, cutting toe nails. Volunteers also drove long distances to collect animals for owners who were unable to transport their pets to the clinic. All the instruments have to get constantly cleaned, all the towels that are used have to be washed at the end of the day. All paperwork is done to keep up to date with all the animals coming and going – I did not realize how much is involved. We were all exhausted at the end of each day so thank goodness for a friend that cooked meals for the volunteers.
The final day, Sunday 5th March was a wellness clinic for animals to get any shots they needed and again flea and tick meds. During this time, a dog was brought in with a rope embedded into its neck, Baark! vet Dr. Jenn was able to immediately address the emergency, removing the makeshift collar and treating the dog with much needed medication. Since the clinic, the dog is recovering wonderfully and is no longer suffering. What great work everyone did, great team, I loved working with Baark!
There are so many thank you’s to say to people who helped to make this happen. Firstly a great big thank you to Baark! To Jack and Nathan’s for donating the rooms for the clinic and volunteers. To Mia at Andros South for accommodating the vets and feeding them and to Brenda for feeding the volunteers. To the residents who helped load and unload cages, to my husband Colin for making shortbread and helping deliver cats and dogs plus helping me clean up! Thank you to all of you who contributed financially. So grateful to you all”.
As you can see – these type of family island MASH clinics - it really takes a village ! We’re always thrilled to be a part of something that brings communities together and we always feel welcomed during our visits. As well as spay/neutering as many animals as possible, our team tries to use these opportunities to educate local residence about responsible ownership and how best to care for their pets.
Thank you so much for again for your donation, your support – and helping the dogs and cats of South Andros !
