Setting up Remedial Schools for Tribal Communites

Prime Trust's Founder and Managing Director, Mr. S.M. Arasu, embarked on a significant journey on August 26, 2023, as he visited the Kuravar community residing in the quaint village of Karikalampakkam. The Kuravars, an indigenous group deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Tamil Nadu, India, boast a rich history and heritage that spans generations. Their presence is predominantly felt in the southern reaches of Tamil Nadu, where they have traditionally thrived in activities linked to hunting, gathering, and the intricate workings of the forests.

Embedded within the tapestry of their existence are distinctive customs, traditions, and rituals that paint a vivid picture of their unique identity. Their celebratory songs, captivating dances, and vibrant festivals pay homage to the natural world that has long intertwined with their way of life. A language closely resembling Tamil serves as their means of expression, although certain groups may have forged their own dialects or incorporated words that diverge from the norm.

The Kuravars, like numerous indigenous communities across India, have weathered historical marginalization, bearing the brunt of socio-economic hardships. Designated as Scheduled Tribes (ST) in several regions of Tamil Nadu, they are entitled to constitutional reservations and privileges, although the extent of these benefits can vary across localities. Characteristically situated on the periphery of forests or nestled amidst hilly terrains, their settlements, often referred to as 'kuravar colonies,' have undergone change due to urbanization and the loss of natural habitats. The pull of urban opportunities has enticed many to leave behind their traditional homelands in pursuit of a more promising livelihood.

Presently, the Kuravars confront a host of contemporary challenges akin to those faced by various indigenous groups in modern-day India. These obstacles encompass the erosion of time-honored livelihoods, the alienation of ancestral lands, societal marginalization, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and more.

On that noteworthy day of August 26, 2023, Mr. S.M. Arasu, the visionary behind Prime Trust, extended his presence to the heart of the Kuravar community residing in Karikalampakkam village. With a forward-looking mission, Prime Trust aims to establish evening schools tailored to the specific needs of the Kuravar community. In doing so, they aspire to uplift the community by providing access to education that aligns with their unique heritage and aspirations.
