Funding for this project will go towards making home improvements for our girls and their families; some of whom live in homes that are not only in need of various improvements, but are as small as two room houses inhabited by multiple siblings, parents and other relatives. This improvements are critical because as we enter the rainy season we are finding that more and more of our girls are missing school due to illness or the need to repair their homes.
The rainy season is a huge problem for many of the Mariposas and their families. Leaky roofs or cracking foundations cause flooding within the homes. As a result, many of our girls get very sick during this time of year and miss school as a result. Additionally, others are kept home to help their families make small repairs or to take care of younger siblings as their parents work on the house.
Funds raised for this project will go towards making roof repairs, putting in cement floors, additional rooms and doors in between bedrooms for many of our Mariposas. These repairs will improve the home environment for not only our girls, but for their families as well. By making these improvements our girls will be able to stay in school during the rainy season and continue their education.
By giving the Mariposas the home environment they need to stay in school, we will be helping to ensure that they finish their education. Many jobs in this community require at least a high school education, and our girls face many hurdles to get themselves through school up to that point. Making these home improvements will be one less obstacle the girls need to overcome and will help to ensure that one day they are educated and valuable members of their community.
