After almost 2 years of closure the schools in Uganda were finally allowed to reopen in January 2022 after being closed for 83 weeks! The reopening of the schools was accompanied by a number of new rules and regulations. One of the conditions is that each child must have their own desk. A large number of the classes have this already. However some students still share desks with 2-3 other students. We therefore need to buy 170 new "single desks" at very short notice, hence this appeal.
The purchase of these single desk units is of great importance for the schools to be able to meet the conditions of the Ugandan government. We have already met all the other very stringent new regulations and were, infact, one of the first schools in the area to be allowed to reopen. It will also mean that pupils no longer need to share desks which should help concentration levels whilst learning and improve class hygiene.
Purchasing the new desks required will allow the schools to comply with the government regulations. The "single desk units" consists of a desk and chair in one. This furniture is handmade from wood, is very sturdy, durable and should lasts for years. A large number of the classes have already been equipped with these desks but we still need to purchase 170 desks.
The purchase of these single desk units is of great importance to be able to meet the conditions of the Ugandan government. In addition, by sitting separately from each other, the students can also keep a better distance from each other and thus helping prevent them from infecting each other with Covid-19 and other infectious diseases. This should also help reduce the risk of possible future outbreaks of sickness in the classroom and the time children ill and are absent from lessons.
