"One gendarme was shot in the road post. We knew it was going to be bad. We received a text message from a friend. - Pack your things and go, now. We left everything in the house, I took a small bag, we did not even take things from our shop. We used the pick-up to carry as many people as we could. Truck after truck of soldiers came, then fire. Everything was burned to the ground. Those around tell me there's no village anymore." Carine, from Kwa Kwa.
For almost two years, there's been a political crisis in Anglophone Cameroon. In the last 6 months, the crisis has turned into open violence between the state's military and guerrilla forces in several rural areas. Entire villages have been burned in retaliation for military casualties. A population of more than 80,000 people doesn't have a village anymore. These suddenly destitute people are trying to survive anywhere. Internally Displaced persons are refugees in their own country.
This project will support 20 displaced families fleeing from armed conflict in the South-West Region of Cameroon. Your donation will help provide emergency expenditures such as feeding and healthcare. When possible, we will complement with locally donated materials so your donation has a greater impact. This project will also set up a database with all the internally displaced persons reaching Buea, capital of the South-West Region, and a system of early identification and linking to services.
We can't anticipate how the conflict will develop. We hope to contribute to the creation of a structure, network and set of procedures that is ready to tackle the humanitarian crisis that could unveil in the coming months and years. When possible, economic support that helps families generate income for themselves and escape poverty will be prioritized. Some basic items (clothing, food) will be gathered through local support networks.
Every microproject is intended to use the donations it receives in accordance with its stated description; however, it is important to provide project leaders with the flexibility to maximize the potential benefit from the donations they receive. This means that your donation may be used as a part of the main project that supports this microproject, specifically Change a Girl's Life Through Microentrepreneurship. In this event, the project leader is required to post an update to the microproject detailing the results and reasons behind this change.
If you or any other donor is unhappy with the way their funds have been used, he or she can reallocate their donation using the GlobalGiving guarantee.
