Dear donor,
Early this year, we identified a problem in our HIV prevention project in Bakassi. While in the past we had focused on pregnant mothers and preventing mother-to-child transmission, we had begun doing some activities with the general population of Bakassi. The HIV rates we discovered were alarming.
Not only because of the high incidence, over 12%, but also because most people were not having treatment at all!
Treating HIV in remote areas is complex, medication is only available in health centers, and the tools to properly analyze the state of the patient are often not there. We made this project in order to subsidize viral load count for some of the 186 people who discovered they are HIV positive thanks to our community health workers doing outreach (test and treatment). This would mean to pay transportation of a blood sample to the nearest hospital to conduct a lab test.
However, our fundraising efforts did not work this time, we have raised 20$ which is insufficient to cover the viral load count for even one person.
We want to thank our generous donor, Mr. Syed, who has given to this and many other projects of this organization. Given that the funds are insufficient to treat even one person, the funds will be added to the budget for our main project.
Even though we could not pay for viral load counts, we ensured that the 186 people, as well as the new people discovering their status in the last months, are put in treatment.
We partially succeeded in that and 98% of pregnant women, 93% of the rest of women and 32% of the men are in treatment today.
We will keep trying to raise funds for better treatment and livelihoods of people living with HIV in remote areas.
Thank you very much for believing in us.
