Maria was born with missing and malformed limbs. The community leader and parents asked for help for Maria to get prosthesis and continue her education.
Most girls do not attend school, or drop out by grade 3. Only a few girls finish 6th grade. Maria's sparkling personality and high intelligence could give Maria an opportunity to stay in school and eventually graduate from University. Maria's family has no money.
The Maya Ixil Scholarship Committee planned to prepare Maria to leave her small village and attend 7th grade in their evening school program in Chajul, Guatemala and board with a family trained to assist with her physical disabilities. There are many pathways, challenges and opportunities that lead to long term solutions for Maria.
The Education Committee assigned a project manager to develop a support program for Maria. He is working with 2 well established foundations to get the medical care, prosthesis, physical therapy and education support provided in a comprehensive plan.
Maria lives in a small remote village that has a number of young people with birth defects. As the Education Committee started investigating a plan for Maria, it became evident that a wider plan needed to be developed for all the disabled children in this community. They are working with a Foundation whose mission is to address these kinds of issues, and work with the community to develop a comprehensive strategy and solutions to best fit the needs and realities of the community and the children.
Thank you Global Giving Donors for your support for Maria.
Maria’s needs will be covered by other funding sources.
We will close this Global Giving project as a well established Foundation is now leading the comprehensive support and funding for Maria.
