"Come, I want you to meet someone. We need your help" The Leader of the remote mountain village led the Maya Ixil Education Director up a steep path to a shack. He had been in this community many times to organize family gardens and meet with parents and teachers at the small school. But he had never seen Maria, who was born with missing and malformed limbs. The community leader and parents asked for help for Maria to get prosthesis and continue her education.
Most girls do not attend school, or drop out by grade 3. Only a few girls finish 6th grade. Maria's sparkling personality and high intelligence could give Maria an opportunity to stay in school and eventually graduate from University. Maria's family has no money. We are appealing to GlobalGiving donors.
Two Health non-profits will help fund prostheses and physical therapy. We are asking GlobalGiving donors to support travel, food and lodging for Maria and an adult family member to go to the city where she can be fitted with prostheses and learn how to use her new hands, and walk with the new feet and leg.
The Maya Ixil Scholarship Committee wants to prepare Maria to leave her small village and attend 7th grade in their evening school program in Chajul, Guatemala and board with a family trained to assist with her physical disabilities. There are many pathways, challenges and opportunities that lead to long term impact. But first we need your help to support Hands, Feet and a Leg for Maria.
