This project is an addition to the main farming effort that provides food to students at two schools in Wakiso District, Buganda, Uganda. We launched the most recent addition to our project, a community farm, in the Mwerewe village in 2019, just outside Kampala. To ensure that we can provide the students with fresh green vegetables, we would like to add a greenhouse to provide more control on excesses of heat or drought.
This project solves the issue of food security for students in Wakiso district. Progress has been made in providing consistent sustenance to students by growing or acquiring food to provide meals to these poor families.
The addition of a greenhouse to the farm will facilitate cultivation of vegetables such as collard greens, cabbage and spinach. Providing a diet of plant-based micronutrients is important for the students' good health and mental development. If the greenhouse is not constructed, the farm is subject to variations of too much or too little water. This can lead to crop failures.
The lunch program will ensure more children stay in school, get an education and become role models in their community. This is a long-term project as we believe that education and providing opportunities for work is the key to ending poverty.
