Years of economic hardship, war and social unrest have left most Liberians with no choice but to use open flames and toxic kerosene lamps to light and heat their homes. These outdated technologies have caused countless accidental fires, fatalities and respiratory illnesses. Solar power is a safe, renewable and inexpensive alternative.
Liberians have been using candles, open fires, and kerosene lamps to light and heat their homes. These outdated technologies are dangerous, often causing accidental fires and emitting carbon monoxide fumes. They're also inefficient, relying on expensive, non-renewable resources.
Imagine if your children had to do their homework by candlelight. Students cannot realistically be expected to meet the challenges of tomorrow using the technology of the distant past. Every solar lantern you help us provide will mean another Liberian family will be able to study, read, write, and socialize safely into the night. That means no more accidental fires, and no more dangerous carbon dioxide fumes inside their homes.
The project will provide a minimum of 5 years of no-cost, bright, clean and safe energy for 80 rural families who earn less than $1 a day. Clean energy use will help to reduce health problems associated with smoke inhalation. Liberians have been using candles, open fires, and kerosene lamps to light and heat their homes.
