Through this program's success, it has become clear that education needs to begin as early as possible to give disadvantaged children a stronger start. The early childhood years are critical for development of the brain, and a child's emotional, social and physical wellbeing. Through the addition of a community Preschool at our new centre, it is our hope that the foundation for education within the trash picker community will be stronger providing them on a positive path to success.
Children of trash picker families spend much of their time on the streets with their parents where they are exposed to traffic, pollution and crime. It is a particularly unsafe environment during a pandemic.
The addition of a preschool program to the Cirendeu Community Centre will provide a safe and inspiring learning environment for younger, more vulnerable children, and would ensure children are better equipped for life at school and beyond. It also allows us to identify issues and intervene sooner, where children have special health or learning needs. Through our preschool program, XSProject will also provide eye examinations, dental care, ear/nose/throat checks, etc.
Giving a trash picker's child a K-12 education and beyond is the first step to breaking the generational cycle of trash picking. Addressing their vision, hearing and health needs assures them to concentrate in school. Socialization with other children in Indonesia's public school system, expands their view of life and the world and encourages them to look beyond their current circumstances. A school helps them look to their future and inspires them to work towards attending college.
