Ground breaking
We are very proud to report that after severally months of challeges with funds we are about to give a family of five a place to call home. We did ground breaking last year on 31st Ocotober. This is how I celebrated my birthday. I asked for donations instead of gifts. On 31st Dec, we travelled to Nyahururu, about 3 hours drive from Nairobi, with 10 students from our organization .The plan was to camp there for 3 days and start off the house. They were determined to sacrifice and assist one of thier own. The church nearby offered us ground to camp. The days were blazing hot and nights freezing cold.
We combined the building shedule with team building. The students learned how to pitch tents. They cooked together and learned alot about building. Things they only learn in class.
This was our very first time to be together during new year eve. We sat around bonfire, sang and chatted until mid night. On 1st we decided to work in the morning and do something fun together in the afternoon. In teams, we worked and learned many things. In the afternoon, we went to visit lake olbosit, the ony lake in central Kenya. The kids had alot of fun. That night, a youth leader from the church joined us. He taught us alot of songs. We stayed up until midnight.
The third day we woke up early, we wanted to finish work by noon and expore more of the area. Julius one of our students who is studying structural engeerering worked with other builders. The rest of us did manual job. carrying ballast, water and cement. In the afternoon, the students went to visit Thompsons falls in Nyahururu. It was there first time to see the falls. The idea of combining work and pay worked very well. They were very happy.
The disabled couple's young kids also joined us. It was their first time to visit town. The town is very close to their current resident but due to difficulties in movement the parents cant go with them to town.
Our last night we shared our experience. All the students were happy to be involved in a commuity service to help one of thier own. John, out student whose parents are disabled said, "this was my best holiday ever, you have all worked hard to help us. Iam so touched by your love." He continued to say,"As you can all see my parents are disabled and can not do much. Iam always forced to do my part and thier part too in taking care of the family."
This trip was an eye opener to most of our kids who think thier parents or gurdians are so poor, they now know health is richness.
We thank everyone who have been part of this cause. The jouney is not over yet until the house is finshed and furnished.
