Fabila's New Bright Smile & Bright Future

By Sandy Kemper | Founder & Director of Smiles Forever

Fabila's New Smile:

Fabila has a new smile thanks to Smiles Forever's Dental School.  Our student Fabila herself needed dental care to replace a crown in her front tooth.  Supplies were donated and our director Alejandro even "chipped in" to help Fabila regain her bright smile.  Now she can greet all the patients with a warm & brilliant smile.

Fabila Finds Happiness & Purpose in her Clinic Work:

Fabila is a second year dental hygienist student who especially enjoys going into the community organizations helping indigenous children.  There are now 10 organizations where she has been serving.  This means she brings dental care to homes for burned children, children who are abandoned, children who have mothers in prison, and children who have cancer or AIDS.

Fabila Brings Food to Homeless Quechan Woman:

Near the dental school, actually in the middle of the street on a median, a Quechan woman has set up a tent.  Fabila is kind-hearted and she also speaks Quechan.  She goes nearly every day to take food; this food is contributed by the students and staff at Smiles Forever.  It is everyone's hope that this woman will find a safer home, and the caring folks at the dental school are trying to help with this.

Fabila's Dental Hygienist Internship Begins:

She is excited to begin her month-long internship where she spends 20 hours per week in community service.  She'll also need to continue to build her total number of hours towards graduation credit.  She already has completed half of her hands-on care requirements.

Fabila Wishes to Share her Personal Story with her GlobalGiving Donors:

I have been working at a beauty salon part-time doing hair and nails, so that I may earn money and stay in school.  I still have struggles in my home life because there are many pressures from my family.  Sometimes they don't understand why I need to graduate.  While my aunt has been so encouraging because she knows about the health field, I haven't been able to convince my father.  Right now I live with my father, but he can be demanding and he has another family to care about.  Sometimes I feel left out and not welcome.

The wonderful people who gave me gifts to help my schooling I want to thank.

I feel I have a chance to get a job in dental work.  I want to improve my own health and appearance, so that people will be more likely to hire me and appreciate me.

                           Muchas Gracias,  Fabila
