Little by Little: Gear for Haiti's Fishermen

Even small donations can make a huge difference for the communities Peace Winds is working to support. From April 8-12, we’re celebrating this by participating in GlobalGiving’s Little by Little campaign! During this time, all donations up to $50 will be matched by 50%, meaning that your support for Peace Winds’ programs will go even further.

This year, Peace Winds is asking you to help local fishermen in southern Haiti get back on their feet. Fishing communities have been hit hard by recent natural disasters as well as the worsening security situation and economic crisis. Peace Winds hopes to raise at least $2,000–and ideally more–to purchase fishing equipment that will help fishermen in Saint Jean du Sud and Les Cayes keep their jobs and support their families.

Peace Winds has partnered with a fishing cooperative, APEDESUD (Association des Pêcheurs de la Deuxième Section de Saint du Sud), which was started by 30 men and 40 women who make a living from fishing along Haiti’s southern coast. Due to Haiti’s recent natural disasters, APEDESUD has suffered catastrophic losses to its profits and its equipment, making it more difficult for co-op members to catch and process seafood.

Peace Winds is working to provide the co-op with an operations space as well as support and training to earn more income from the sale of the seafood they catch and process, such as tuna, mackerel, haddock, shrimp, and lobster. But APEDESUD desperately needs fishing gear. With the help of our donors, we hope to provide new equipment–such as a communal boat, fishing line, nets, and coolers–so that co-op members can earn enough income to support their families and catch enough fish to feed their community.

We are so grateful for the support of our donors! In the past, your contributions have helped us provide mobility aids to disabled earthquake survivors and vocational training to women’s and youth groups. Now, we are asking for your support of our program for Haiti’s local fishermen. Even small donations can provide much-needed equipment, and during the week of April 8, these donations will go even further thanks to GlobalGiving. Check out the graphic below to learn how your donation will help.
