Peace Winds is helping to revitalize a fisherman's cooperative in southern Haiti. The local fishing industry has been suffering due to the economic crisis, natural disasters such as the 2021 earthquake, and security issues throughout the country. All of these factors are making it difficult for Haitians to maintain their jobs and support their families. We need your help to give a group of men and women in the Sud the tools they need to be successful.
APEDESUD is a fishery cooperative started by 30 men and 40 women who make a living from fishing along Haiti's southern coast. These local fishermen are struggling after losing much of their equipment and boats as a result of natural disasters in recent years, and the deteriorating security situation elsewhere in the country also makes it difficult for them to get new gear. As a result, the co-op used to earn about $500 a month, but this has now dropped to about $20 a month.
Peace Winds has partnered with APEDESUD to provide its members with an operations space as well as support and training to earn more income from the sale of the seafood they catch and process. But the co-op desperately needs fishing gear. With the help of our donors, we hope to provide new equipment-such as a communal boat, fishing line, nets, and coolers-so that co-op members can earn enough income to support their families and catch enough fish to feed their community.
With your help, Peace Winds' partnership with APEDESUD will give the co-op the fishing gear it needs to enable its members to get back on their feet and make a living. They will be better equipped to sell their products at local markets and maintain a steady income, and APEDESUD will be more resilient in the face of future natural disasters.
