Supporting LGBTIQ Lives Amid HIV Funding Cuts

By Mbarara Rise Foundation | Project leader

Dear Kind Donors

Due to recent funding cuts, including the suspension of U.S. HIV support, Mbarara Rise Foundation and the LGBTIQ individuals it serves have faced significant challenges. Many community members living with HIV have been unable to afford consultation fees for ARV refills or access reliable health services due to drug stock outs and discrimination. These issues have increased the risk of treatment interruption and deepened poverty levels. At the same time, the organization’s staff have also been affected, working under resource constraints to maintain essential services.

What We Have Accomplished

In response, Mbarara Rise Foundation has taken urgent steps to support its members and staff. So far, 62 LGBTIQ individuals have received emergency assistance to access HIV treatment, and legal aid support including coverage of consultation fees and transport to health facilities. Additionally, 12 members who faced severe financial hardship received short-term food relief. The organization retained its core staff, offering modest allowances even under reduced budgets, ensuring continued community outreach and follow-up support. A temporary crisis response team was also established to manage emergency needs such as eviction threats, health concerns, and mental health support. Moreover, three local partners have been engaged to offer in-kind support in transport, food, and psychosocial care.

What Is Still Needed

Despite this progress, urgent needs remain. At least 138 additional LGBTIQ individuals still require support for ARV refills, consultation fees, and safe transport to healthcare facilities. The organization also needs funding to sustain five essential staff members who are central to maintaining community services and crisis response. Mental health concerns among members continue to rise due to stigma, stress, and loss of access to care requiring scaled-up psychosocial support services. Lastly, the emergency fund is nearly depleted, and there is a critical need to replenish it to ensure the organization can continue to respond to urgent cases as they arise.

Conclusion

Mbarara Rise Foundation remains committed to standing with the LGBTIQ community through this crisis. The initial steps taken show the organization’s resilience and determination, but further support is urgently needed. With adequate resources, the Foundation can continue to protect the health, rights, and dignity of LGBTIQ individuals affected by HIV and structural discrimination during this difficult period. Thank you.
