Women have a critical role to play in ecosystem restoration initiatives. Restoring the natural, regenerative function of the land to increase water and food security for local communities and restore biodiversity. Empowering women and promoting their participation in the restoration of degraded land across the globe is paramount to successfully mitigating the disastrous effects of climate change.
In many of the lowest income regions in the world, women are the primary caretakers of natural resources like land, water, and forests. These women are often responsible for gathering water, wood fuel, and growing food for their families. Consequently, women are often the first to experience the effects of environmental degradation and climate change. Yet globally, women and girls still face systemic barriers to social equality, equity and justice, especially in time of environmental distress.
Supporting land restoration projects spearheaded by or significantly involving women will empower more women in their communities and increase gender equality, with more women assuming leadership roles and contributing equally to decision-making processes in the fight against climate change and global land degradation. Their amplified role in creating a regenerative culture will benefit both current and future generations.
Women at Ecosystem Restoration Communities are living proof of the strength & determination needed to counter environmental & social injustices against women. They are creating a better, more equitable world by leading their communities in regenerative practices. Restoring thousands of hectares globally is leading to an increase in soil fertility; a reduction in soil erosion, floods & drought; and the re-establishment of entire food webs to reduce poverty & create more sustainable livelihoods.
