Our Plastic Bottle Greenhouses project offers the opportunity to expand our harvest well into the rainy or dry season as well as create seedlings to sell at the market to other farmers. Starting the farming process with seedlings rather than just seeds leads to exponentially greater success in growing crops. Protecting seedlings against the elements until they're viable is a real challenge without a greenhouse.
Our Greenhouse Project offers the opportunity to expand our harvest well into the rainy or dry season as well as create seedlings to sell at the market to other farmers. Starting the farming process with seedlings rather than just seeds leads to exponentially greater success in growing crops. Protecting seedlings against the elements until they're viable is a real challenge without a greenhouse.
The plastic bottles that will be used to build the greenhouses will reduce plastic waste in the village which does not have proper garbage disposal. Their waste is burned and when burning plastic they are filling the air with toxic fumes. Some villagers do not burn the plastic bottles, but leave them on the ground or in piles to never break down, but pollute the small village. We will recycle up to 1,500 plastic bottles per greenhouse to create the walls.
When the greenhouse walls need to be replaced after approximately 5 years, we will use the old bottles to create concrete and plastic bottle benches for the soccer field. Currently there is no seating for the locals and these benches will provide a place to watch the games in comfort instead of the hard ground. The benches will be the safe final resting place for the bottles that would typically be burned creating a toxic environment or left to rot on the ground.
