Summary

This project will create a bank of Composting Toilets at Kisola Primary School. Your donation will provide clean and safe sanitation for 200 students. Clean sanitation is a challenge for rural Kenyan schools. Composting toilets are hygienic, smell and fly-free, and safe for students to use, while creating rich compost for school kitchen gardens and tree planting. Along with providing clean sanitation, students will learn about composting and the role it plays in sustainable agriculture.

Challenge

Imagine being a child at school having to use the toilet. The current pit latrines smell, are filled with flies and have feces and urine on the floor. Many of the toilets are old and on the verge of collapsing. Composting toilets provide a clean and safe sanitation solution while ensuring human waste does not flow into underground waterways. The compost generated will be used for kitchen gardens and tree planting and to nourish the soil. It's a solution that has multiple benefits!

Solution

Students who have been using composting toilets at two Kenya Connect partner schools love them! They are easy to use, don't smell, and are safe. Girls especially like using them during their menstrual cycle. These toilets help keep children healthy and provide an elegant sanitation solution. We are excited that the World Youth Model U.N. (WYMUN) are partnering with us on this important project!

Long-Term Impact

This project will provide clean sanitation for 200 students at Kisola Primary School for years to come. This locally constructed buildings and compost toilets provide work for local craftsmen, jobs for the compost custodians and a clean and safe place for children to use the toilet. It also demonstrates a solution for people to install in their homesteads.
