Single parent, Tai, has exhausted her financial aid and scholarships used toward earning her Nursing Degree. Her employer had planned to provide a continuing scholarship, but when COVID hit, they rescinded their offer. As a result, she had an unpaid tuition balance of nearly $10,000 and she will have over $17,000 in debt by her December 2022 graduation. Supporters of this project will ensure that Tai can continue to work toward her degree, forever changing her and her son's life.
Hailing from Africa, Tai has always dreamed of becoming a nurse. Despite working and caring for her 12-year-old son, Tai has persisted with college in order to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, she has always struggled with rent and bills due to the overwhelming costs of her tuition, but she hasn't given up! Now, so close to graduation, she may be derailed due to unmet tuition payments. Your donations will ensure that Tai can continue her hard work and make her dreams a reality.
As a Black single mother, Tai is dangerously close to becoming a statistic. While nearly 2 in every 5 black women in college are single mothers, only 8% who begin college will earn their degrees within 6 years of starting it. A single mother with a Bachelor's degree will earn $610,000 more in her lifetime than with only a high school diploma. Removing this financial barrier to education will allow Tai to graduate and ultimately help reduce racial inequity related to wealth creation.
This project supports our mission of ensuring single parents can attend college & graduate with a degree, pulling themselves and their children out of poverty. According to our March 2021 participant survey, 100% of our participants stated they would have dropped out of college if not a part of our program. 62% confirmed that their GPAs improved from below 3.0 to above 3.0 & 62% saw their income levels improve while in our program, making it easier for them to maintain their housing & childcare.
