COVID 19 INTERVENTIONS REPORT APRIL TO JUNE
People had been hopeful that the Covid-19 curve would have reached the peak and flattened over this period. On the contrary, the number of infections has increased making it difficult for people to go back to their ways of living. Survivors of trafficking are still struggling economically, their businesses remain closed and getting employment during this period has proved impossible.
HAART Kenya had 79 open cases in April, 150 in May and 160 by the end of June. We are offering support to 26 survivors who are abroad with a group of 11 Kenyan women stuck in Saudi Arabia. We referred the cases to an external organization for assistance with their repatriation once the travel ban is lifted. We have a total of 18 survivors in need of repatriation assistance from different countries. During the period we have also provided them and their families with basic needs. Two of the survivors awaiting rescue from the perpetrator have reported being mistreated as a way to lure them to accept placement for work. They are denied food, clean drinking water, and the air conditioner switched off in their rooms. HAART Kenya offered finances to cater for food and personal effects but they are not allowed to go and make these purchases.
We are also offering support to 1 victim in Iraq, 4 victims in India, 1 in Dubai, 3 in Nepal, 1 victim in Bahrain, 3 in Uganda, 1 in Tanzania, and 1 victim in Thailand- a mother with a young baby. With assistance from a partner organization, the repatriation plans for the survivor in Bahrain was successful and she is home with her family.
The three Nepalese survivors who had been under the care of HAART and were repatriated back to their country last year reached out to us due to the difficulties brought about by the pandemic. On following up with one, it is unfortunate that she may be at risk of being re-trafficked. She has been promised a job in Dubai and her passport is in the care of the agent. Our main mode of support is through online cash transfer. We have organised a safe migration training for her.
Over the course of 4 months, we managed to raise USD 178 under GlobalGiving. We continue to seek funds under our different projects for these survivors.
Your donations have gone a long way and your continued support will help touch the heart of a human trafficking survivor.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
