Gratitude for your help to Honduran families

By Amanda Blewitt | Board Member

November of 2020 was an excruciating month for Honduras. More than two-thirds of a year into the pandemic that had already done such damage to Honduran health and livlihoods, Hurricanes Eta and Iota tore through the country within mere days of each other. People were terrified, flooded, stranded. It felt almost like the end.

We on the Un Mundo Board of Directors watched, helplessly, as each of these hurricanes gained strength. We called and texted and then paced for days when we couldn't get in touch with our family members and friends in the Cuenca Cangrejal. The only thing we knew to do was to gather resources that we could offer once lines of communication were back open; anxiously, we created this fundraising page.

Your generosity in response to our call was absolutely amazing. It gives us goosebumps to remember the hope you instilled when you helped us to reach our fundraising goal at lightning speed. The dread we'd felt when the hurricanes first formed was outweighed by optimism that, together, we could do something to help folks in Honduras.

Thanks to your donations, Un Mundo was able to provide humanitarian assistance to 500 families in 14 communities — in the form of food, health supplies (including masks, gloves, sanitizer, and water purification solution), and hygiene kits (including soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes). Although they had to sometimes hitch rides on Caterpillar trucks across the river to do so, Un Mundo staff made it to even the most remote communities to deliver supplies at a time when most thought help would never come. This — life-sustaining resources that brought hope in the darkness — is the gift you helped to provide to the Cuenca Cangrejal.

In 2021, Un Mundo still has much work to do to continue providing education, health, and other community programming during continually challenging times. Nonetheless, the (safely masked) smiles of the Un Mundo staff, volunteers, and the 500 families who received aid through this project say it all: we are going to make it through this together.

Thank you again. We appreciate you so much!

Fondly,

The Un Mundo U.S. Board of Directors
