Corona Virus has quarantined people living in Rwanda and the TWA-historically marginalized have no source of income beyond clay pot making and selling. There income has been cut off and they have no food supply. They were settled in places without enough land to create gardens or plant banana trees, so their livelihood is based on the ability to sell their pots or carry sand. 225+ families are in desperate need of basic staple foods to survive the country imposed quarantine.
There are 520 historically marginalized people (TWA) living in the Nyanza district. Rwanda has imposed a "stay in place" quarantine for the country and all non essential business has been closed. The Twa normally are making and selling clay pots and working on construction sites. They now have no work, no savings and no food. They were settled in areas without enough land to create gardens, so they have no other food source beyond what they can buy from their small income. Hunger will increase.
Dufatanye will distribute basic food staples (maize flour, beans, salt) to 225 Twa families in the area. We will also distribute soap to help with sanitation and necessary Corona Virus measures. The food will be just enough to support them during this harsh Corona time. It will also help them to abide by the quarantine instead of resorting to stealing out of desperate times which can also lead to violence, injury and possible death.
225 Twa families will receive basic food items to sustain them during the country imposed quarantine. The Twa will learn their need to work beyond pottery and construction, so we will offer to organize cooperatives and work on the agricultural farm. The training they receive will encourage them to grow food and fruit trees at their homes, as well. This will supply them with the food they need daily. This knowledge will then be passed down to their children for generations to come.
