THE GIFT OF NUTRITION AND EDUCATION FOR AT RISK HAITIAN PRESCHOOLERS

Most of the children attending Our Lady of Perpetual Help primary school in Petite-Riviere de l’ Artibonite are exposed to multiple risks including poverty, malnutrition and poor health.

Over the past six years, notable progress has been achieved at the school: its enrollment doubled from 300 to 600; textbooks and pedagogical materials were made available; pass rates in national examinations improved. Also noteworthy was the hiring of better prepared teachers. In 2008, a school feeding program, subsidized mainly by the Government of Haiti, was launched, providing each student with a daily nutritious meal including rice, beans, vegetables and occasionally meat and fish. For the majority of the children this was the only meal of the day.

The unexpected and abrupt elimination of the program at the beginning of school year 2014-2015 created a crisis at the school. Most of the children came to school hungry; some suffered from abdominal pains and/or headaches. Moreover, the children's cognitive and educational performance was also adversely impacted.

The Emergency Food Situation in School microproject launched at the end of the school year in May 2015 aimed at addressing this crisis. Thanks to your generosity, we reached our goal of $3,000.  When the 200 three to five- year- olds return to school in September 2015, they will benefit from a daily nutritious meal for at least the first three months.  We expect that this meal will make them more attentive and better able to learn.

The daunting challenge of raising additional funds for the remaining six months of the year remains. Please help us sustain the progress achieved so far. You can do so by giving to the Head Start for 230 pre-School-Children- in Haiti project ( see link below).

One great day to support the feeding program for the preschoolers will be Wednesday, July 15th starting at 9:00:01 EDT when GlobalGiving will provide a 40% match to donations made on line until available matching funds are spent.

Thank you for your interest in and support for this project that provides nourishment and education to at risk Haitian preschoolers.
