By Bebee Bason Lee | President, JA of Eastern North Carolina
Contributions made through Global Giving to Junior Achievement of Eastern North Carolina provided funding for twenty eight (28) high school students in Raleigh, NC to participate in Junior Achievement program Success Skills. Junior Achievement’s Success Skills program consists of seven 50 minute classes which are taught directly in the classroom by a trained Junior Achievement volunteer.
For this Global Giving project a JA volunteer with 25 years JA teaching experience led the Broughton High School students through lessons and activities exploring interpersonal skills required for career and personal success. Steve McLaurin, Vice President of McLaurin Parking Company in Raleigh and a member of our local JA Board of Directors served as classroom volunteer for this project had this to say about the experience…
“I recently taught a 9th grade class at Broughton High School. Before arriving I was informed this was an at-risk class with most of these students sadly projected to not finish high school. I accepted the assignment as a challenge and embraced it. With over 25 years of in-class room experience with JA, I expanded the Success Skills program and actually taught ten lessons extracting activities from several JA courses to create relevance for these students. We created teams for them to work within, working in a competitive atmosphere with all teams having an equal chance for success. I am proud to report an overwhelming success experienced as these students took delight in these lessons and activities. I even heard of one highly introverted student who was so excited about one of the classes and how he participated, he excitedly told another teacher of his delight in working with other students as he traditionally did not participate in group activities.”
McLaurin went on to say “I cannot say enough about the impact JA can have and does have upon the many students we reach. It will be my pleasure to continue to work with JA and I wish it many years of continued success in its mission.”
Junior Achievement of Eastern NC is grateful to the many Global Giving donors who made this experience possible. Through your generous contribution these Raleigh high school students were directly impacted and received training and preparation for their future careers and personal success.
