Project Report: E-Bikes 4 Wildlife Protection

By Marita Walther | Project Leader

In Namibia, illegal poaching is a growing concern. Anti-Poaching Units work hard to protect the environment and fight off poachers. Game guards need to be on constant patrol and have to cover large areas, mainly by foot, to move as silently and efficiently through the wild environment as possible.

"It's hard work", says Edward Mwaulika, who covers 30km a day on sandy tracks. In his case, it used to be, before he got his new bicycle, which is electric and solar powered. Now patrolling the Salambala Conservancy by E-Bike, Edward covered 5 200km within the first 10 months. With E-Bikes game guards can cover larger areas and move silently through the rugged environment to detect suspicious activities. A solar recharge station supports the E-Bikes with electricity, also in off grid areas, for no extra costs and zero environmental pollution.

Through our Project, E-Bikes 4 Wildlife Protection, we aimed to raise funds to support more game guards in Namibia with sustainable, future-thinking patrolling alternatives. Despite having raised only $255 on GlobalGiving, the campaign had the desired effect in that it raised awareness for E-Bikes as patrolling alternatives in off-grid areas.

We would like to thank oour donours for their support towards improving the lives of our local game guards. The Project will continue beyond this campaign and donations will always be welcome.

Yours in sustainable mobility
