Picture Jacinta, a thrilled 10-year-old girl, touched by the generosity and love of people like you. Because of you, Jacinta and 89 classmates have two classrooms to learn - something they could only dream of just three months ago. Now, we need to fill these classrooms with desks so that Jacinta and others can sit comfortably, concentrate, engage, and learn.
Proper classroom furniture is linked to an increase in collaboration, focus, and student engagement. However, lack of desks remains a serious problem in rural Kenya. In Busia County, the desk-to-child ratio is 1:10. As a result, desks are overcrowded, and many children sit on concrete floors for the entire school day. This inhibits learning and increases the risk of problem behaviors.
COCEKenya is funding the construction of 90 desks and chairs to be used in our two newly built empty classrooms. $39 will buy one desk built by local carpenters. Your donation will provide a comfortable seat for each child, which will enhance their concentration and opportunity to engage and learn.
Jacinta and her classmates face daily challenges, like poverty, hunger, losing loved ones to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and now COVID-19. Being educated improves their future and that of their families and the broader community. The classroom donation was a welcome respite for decades to come. Having proper classroom furniture will improve academic excellence and ensure a well-connected youth with a promising future.
