Cyclone Amphan, the first super cyclone to form in the Bay of Bengal since 1999 hit West Bengal on May 20th this year. Three districts in India's West Bengal, including South 24 Parganas, where our HATW partner, New Life Centre school (NLC) is situated, were very badly hit. The school suffered only minor damage, but there has been huge destruction in their local area. Most of the families in the school live in mud huts and many of these have been destroyed or damaged
The huge amount of damage and devastation caused by Cyclone Amphan, combined with the extreme challenges of COVID-19 'shut down' have left New Life Centre school with issues never encountered before. Their area was already disadvantaged with a great deal of poverty. Now, whilst the community and schools are closed due to COVID-19, and with badly damaged electricity cables affecting communications, the school's aim is to provide vitally needed support to their children, families & community
Founder and Director of the NLC, Alindra Naskar, will be the first point of contact for staff as well as pupils and their families, who have been affected by storm damage. This project will ensure that he has a relief fund to assist those in need, whether it be rebuilding damaged homes, helping with repairs or an emergency food parcel. Providing food and essentials to the NLC community affected by the cyclone.
Alindra Naskar has devoted his life to the service of others. He, with the help of his staff team of teachers, will continue with the amazing support, encouragement and devotion to the school's pupils and their community: achieving success for individuals, and hope for the community. Despite this huge recent tragedy and against all adversity, this team, with your support are determined to be a stronger force for good in the world
