The LA Corps seeks to increase college enrollments among young adults(18-24 years old). This project directly supports career counseling and career exploration activities for first generation high school students entering college for the first time. Participants will receive support with enrolling in classes, applying for financial aid and scholarships.
This project will provide career exploration for first generation high school students entering college for the first time. First generation students are the first person in their family to attend college. This presents a set of unique challenges for first generation students who drop out of college at higher rates than second and third generation students. College retention of first generation youth works best when a student understands his/her career pathway and has a support network.
This project will maintain the LA Corps college and career counseling program and expand Career Day to include a wider array of professional speakers. Career Day presents an opportunity for students to meet professionals in the fields of business, education, probation, and childcare. Students learn the importance of completing a vocational trade, a college degree and building strong professional networks.
The LA Corps Transition program serves over 100 young men and women per year, directly decreasing the high rates of unemployment among young adults 18-24 years old and creating economic prosperity and stability that benefits present and future generations. Direct employment search and career support provides hope for participants and their families. The goal is to increase employment and education opportunities for young adults.
