The school is currently using the dining hall as a storage room for broken desks and chairs, forcing students to eat outside standing up. This is because the dining hall is located next to the kitchen, which has insufficient ventilation, causing the hall to become very smoky. We hope to convert the dining hall into a common room which can function as both a library and a dining hall. It will also be used by students during spare periods, freeing up another classroom for ICT.
The interior of the planned common room is in a poor state and needs to be refurbished. There are many broken chairs and desks which need to be restored. New furniture such as shelves need to be installed inside the room to hold books. The kitchen with poor ventilation is very makeshift; the structure is not well built, allowing the spread of smoke into the dining area.
We are now fundraising to furnish the common room with new furniture and shelves. The existing chairs and desks need to be repaired to be used in classrooms. The kitchen requires a stove and connecting chimney to replace the open fire and prevent any smoke from entering the common room.
Furnishing the common room will allow students to have a quiet place to read, and improve literacy. It also provides a space for productive studying. Also, students will be able to sit down and eat in a relaxed and healthy environment. It will promote rest wellness so they feel ready for their classes after lunch. Additionally, space is freed up for an ICT room; in a rapidly changing digital landscape, computer literacy is essential for success.
